EDWARDSVILLE - News surrounding the IHSA's decision to shift football, girls volleyball and boys soccer to the spring and the shortening of all seasons but fall began trickling out on social media just before 3 p.m. Wednesday. It was a lot of news to digest for area athletic directors and coaches at Edwardsville High School, Metro-East Lutheran and Father McGivney. "We will be able to play and the kids will be able to get something going here in the fall. We are going to have to drop some dates and change some things around, but the kids are going to get the opportunity to compete. That's the primary thing," Edwardsville athletic director Alex Fox said. All games and competitions will be limited to teams within the same Illinois COVID Region or conference. Fans will be subject to the Illinois Department of Health guidelines at the time. Teams will play shortened seasons in the winter, spring and summer and a state series will be determined on a sport-by-sport basis. It was positive news for boys and girls cross country, boys and girls golf, girls tennis and girls swimming teams. The fall season will run from Aug. 10 through Oct. 24. All the teams will have an opportunity to play this fall, assuming the health crisis doesn't get worse. "We have a season. We don't know what that season will look like, but we have one. I would rather the girls be able to play than not play at all," EHS girls golf coach Libby Koonce said. Edwardsville boys golf coach Adam Tyler echoed Koonce's thoughts on getting to play, but he still had some questions moving forward. Typically, both the EHS boys and girls golf teams...

Michigan high school sports council approves ‘phased-in’ plan for fall sports

Fall sports for Illinois high schools were spared the death penalty Wednesday. In an announcement a bit undermined by the state's Governor a couple hours earlier, the Illinois High School Association released its plan for modified prep sports season in 2020-21. IHSA executive director Craig Anderson called it "a solid plan under our current limits and restrictions that we have in Illinois" that will expand the school year's sports calendar from three seasons to four. Three traditional fall sports - football, girls volleyball and boys soccer - will shift to the spring, moving baseball, softball, track, girls soccer, boys volleyball and boys tennis to a summer season tentatively scheduled to end June 26. The modifications with sports involving area schools include: Fall sports - Boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, girls tennis, girls swimming/diving. Practice begins Aug. 10 with season ending by Oct. 17. Winter sports - Boys and girls basketball, wrestling, boys and girls bowling, boys swimming/diving, cheerleading, dance. Practice begins Nov. 16 with season ending by Feb. 13. Spring sports - Football, girls volleyball, boys soccer. Practice begins Feb. 15 with season ending by May 1. Summer sports - Baseball, softball, boys and girls track, girls soccer, boys volleyball, boys tennis. Practice begins May 3 with season ending by June 16. Roxana athletics director Mark Briggs, who ignited a statewide discussion toward modified seasons to save all seasons, endorsed the IHSA's plan, though it fell short of his proposed model that would have retained the three-seasons calendar with most spring sports flipping seasons with some fall. "Overall, this is a positive because our athletes have...
